Every great kitchen remodel pays close attention to selecting light fixtures, because they add the perfect finishing touch by taking the design and style up a notch. As we prepare for our upcoming Mid-Century Modern Panel, I’ve discovered some fabulous lights whose design is inspired by the architectural style of homes built between 1945-1975. Here are my favorites for use in kitchens and dining areas:

This Mid-Century Pendant by West Elm features opal white shades and brass-finished hardware. The adjustable chords allow for the perfect height for varying dining and ceiling heights. The shape is classic mid-century design, yet so refined it can work in most kitchen styles.

The Beso Collection by Feiss is inspired by 1960’s Scandinavian design, and the sleek, simple lines would suit any mid-century modern home. The metal shades come in black, brushed steel, and polished nickel. This pendant would look fantastic centered over a kitchen island.

The Isaac 1 Light Pendant by Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co. looks like an upside-down wine goblet! It would be perfect over a bar or serving area in the kitchen. These are custom-lathed of brass in their Portland factory, with your choice of the natural brass, black, white or persimmon finishes. The simple shape makes it perfect for all contemporary styles.

If you’re remodeling a vintage mid-century modern home, the perfect light fixture for your new kitchen may already be somewhere else in the house. Take a look at the photo above and note the pendant light over the sink. During the kitchen design process, the Mosby designer noticed the pendant hanging in the owners’ basement, and brought it upstairs to add some historical character. It’s fun to add pops of MCM authenticity to a new kitchen. My favorite places in St. Louis to find vintage mid-century modern lights are TFA Antiques and Rocket Century.
