01 mosby craft basement

When a Wentzville, MO family built a brand new home they purposely left the walk-out basement unfinished so they could learn what they wanted from that space. Two years later they knew the basement should serve as a multi-tasking lower level. Mosby Building Arts essentially transformed a raw basement into a 3rd story of their home.

Descending the new staircase reveals an expansive family room with built-in bookcases flanking a gas fireplace. There is room for 3 separate seating areas, and sliding glass doors leading out to the backyard.

The soothing paint color is Amazing Gray by Sherwin-Williams, and note that all the drywall edges have a 3/4″ radius trim, which gives a subtle curve detail. In this view of the family room, the doorway on the right leads to a guest bedroom.

Mosby added an egress window to the guest bedroom to not only provide light and a view, but for a required safety feature. Egress windows are required for basements where people will sleep, but they can be attractive and useful at all times.

This bedroom has direct access to a full bathroom, which can be closed off to create a private guest suite.

The bathroom continues the soothing theme with a Showplace Cabinets vanity in a Dorian Gray satin finish, and a pebble gray Onyx shower surround. The other entrance to this bathroom leads out to…

…an extra wide hallway. Next to the stairs is a deep storage closet, and at the end of the hall to the left is access to the utilities. If you take a right, you come to where the creativity is!

Welcome to the craft studio! Note that the craft room and the bathroom share the same Armstrong Alterna vinyl flooring in Bleached Sand. Vinyl flooring is softer under foot and withstands heavy use and moisture like a champ, with easy clean up.

The craft room serves many purposes: there’s an abundance of built-in and cabinet storage for craft items, plus a gigantic walk-in closet accessed by a sliding barn door. Above left you see the home office section whose desk is two base cabinets joined by the same Formica countertops (in Paloma Polar) used for the work table and wall cabinet tops.

And here’s an entire wall of gorgeous storage! Like the bathroom, the cabinetry is the Savannah style by Showplace, and these have a white satin finish. All of the drawers here, and in the stand-up cabinets across the room, have easy-slide trays so all items can be quickly seen, which is an important feature for following the creative muse when it strikes.

The entire family finds they naturally gravitate to the finished basement because it encourages recreation, creativity and togetherness. It feels good, and that’s the ultimate goal of a finished basement remodeling project.
