“If you build it, he will come.” – Field of Dreams

…well, not necessarily. Just because you make a pinball room is no guarantee that intense tournaments with friends become a weekly ritual. If the pinball arcade is uncomfortable or poorly lit, you may wind up with a lot of valuable equipment just gathering dust.

RECREATION ROOMS
There are secrets and guidelines to creating spaces that people flock to for a good time. For instance, there are precise measurements for optimal poker, foosball and pool tables.

CRAFT ROOM
The most impressive-looking craft room will be a bust if your feet or back hurt every time you use it. Creativity requires comfort.

A table height between 32”-36” lets most people work comfortably when standing or sitting on a bar-height chair. Start with a table top that is a minimum of 30” wide, which is enough room to work and still be able to reach everything. Increase or decrease the size based on what craft you will do most on the surface. For instance, quilting needs a much larger tabletop for all that fabric!

CHILDREN’S CRAFT ROOM
For a craft room dedicated to the kids, chair height is the most important part to get right. Their feet should be flat on the floor and knees bent at a 90 degree angle. Once you have the right height chair, pick a table that is 8” above the chair seat.

DINING ROOM
For meals that turn into lingering conversation and warm memories, you need to pick a table to fit the size of the dining room. It requires a bare minimum of 36” between the table edge and the wall, with 45”-48” inches of space being ideal. Each guest needs a minimum of 24” of table surface; 30” provides the elbow room needed for ultimate comfort.  In general, you need at least 12” between the seat of the chair and the tabletop, and guests’ feet should be able to rest flat on the floor.
