Brick Color Change

Q. We are looking at a house in St. Charles that has ugly dark brick and an unattractive porch roof. Can the brick be painted and a new Craftsman/Mission type facade be feasible? Can you even paint brick successfully?

A. Yes, brick can be painted successfully with proper preparation. However, you will be left with a painted brick that looks like painted brick and will require additional painting to maintain the appearance.

Another option to consider is brick staining. It is a process that re-colors the brick and mortar with a deep penetrating stain that will not affect the surface texture of the brick while retaining the natural brick look.

We did an addition to a brick home, and because the original style of brick was no longer available, we opted to stain the rest of the brick to match the new brick on the addition. See pictures of that project here.

The process is labor intensive but well worth it because of the beautiful results. Please keep in mind that both painting and staining of brick is permanent, so there’s no going back to the original look in the future.
