Concrete Driveway Heaving

Q. I listen to your talk show and am looking for an expert opinion on the problem with my driveway before I contact someone to take a look at it. Here is my problem: Where the driveway meets the garage floor, the driveway has raised about 2 inches above the garage floor. I first noticed this about 2 weeks ago. I assume it is related to the cold weather. We have been in this house for 2 1/2 years and this is the 3rd winter and I have never noticed this problem before. We had the house built new in 1998 and the driveway is on a slight incline. Please let me know what might be the problem and what I can do about this. I appreciate your help.

A. Your problem sounds like frost heave and it is happening all over the area. St. Louis hasn't had a real cold winter in many years so issues related to frost heave are becoming apparent now. There is little to do about frost heave until the spring thaw except minimize the damage to surrounding items like garage doors, siding and wood jambs that extend down on top of the heaving slab. The heaved slab may or may not move back down to its original position after the spring thaw. Good luck.
