Returning Painted Brick to Original Look

Q. We recently purchased a home which is approximately 30 years old. The brick on the fireplace has been painted at some point. We would like to remove the paint without damaging the hardwood floors or harming our 2 small children. We have read about a product called "peel away No. 7" which promises easy (is there really such a thing?) removal of the paint. Are you familiar with the peel away line? Do you have any other suggestions for the paint removal?

A. The peel away stripper process is very good as it holds the stripper and the fumes against the paint during the most critical time. I am not optimistic that the paint will be fully removed from something as porous as brick. The peel away is likely your best avenue to peruse. Expect some minor paint to be retained in the mortar and the brick.
