Plumbing Do Not Use Muriatic Acid

Q. When I asked at the home improvement store where I could find Rid_x for drain maintenance, he said “All I do is pour a half cup of muriatic acid down the drain and let it sit for a couple of hours and that takes care of everything.”

What do you think of that?

A. We at Mosby Building Arts work hard to share our knowledge so misguided advice like this can not cause damage to you or your home. Unfortunately, orange vest experts seldom call on the Mosby Blue experts for the proper solution, and poor advice like this is the result.

We absolutely DISAGREE with this method. Acid solutions used on a regular basis will destroy iron pipes and is harmful to older porcelain fixtures. Rid-X is an organic ingredient maintenance procedure that will digest organics built up in the pipes and has absolutely no ill effects to the system. Muriatic acid may not hurt PVC or other drain lines, but it is much too aggressive for monthly maintenance and it is potentially dangerous to use if not careful. It can cause serious burns to you and the fumes are horrible.

For monthly or annual maintenance to the pipes please stick to the safe solution of the Rid-X treatment. Here is the pipe maintenance recipe.
