Roof Types & Systems

Q. A large section of my asphalt shingle roof has to be replaced with new shingles because they went bad. But the rest of the shingles are fine.

It's the same shingle across the entire roof, but why did some go bad and not others? And how long should asphalt shingles usually last?

A. Asphalt shingles can last from 12 - 30 years, depending on the conditions around your home.

But when only a portion of the shingles have failed prematurely, it suggests that the problem is not with the roofing material but with your attic ventilation.

The roof is actually a system working in tandem. The components are:
Shingles
Flashing
Soffit, Fascia & Gutters
Attic Ventilation
Air Infiltration
Insulation

If one of these links in the chain is out of whack, the entire roof system is put in jeopardy.

Read about the pieces of your roof system and how they work in tandem.

Before replacing the failed shingles, you should have your attic inspected for proper ventilation. This is service we offer, and you can set up a consulting visit by calling our office at 314.909.1800 or contacting us here.
