Trim Installation of Base Trim Over Stucco

Q. We would like to add some baseboard interior trim against a stucco wall which is attached to a concrete wall. What is the best way to attach the baseboard? It will not go flush against the wall.

A. You have two choices to get the board “flat” against the stucco on the interior wall. Either grind or rake the stucco to a smooth surface and “inset” the base trim into the now flat area, or mount the trim proud to the wall and caulk the top gap. I suggest a combination of both where you rake or grind the biggest “bumps off the plaster and then mount over the smoother plaster with a smaller caulk joint at the top gap.

I also suggest that you use a masonry bit to carefully drill through the stucco to install expansion anchors to receive trim screws. Glue the plastic screw anchors into the plaster and let the adhesive dry. Then attach the base trim with screws into the anchors. Caulk and finish paint.
